Artist Bio
Relentlessly inspired by the coasts and forests of the Pacific Northwest, Marissa Stone creates ceramic sculptures that reflect her connection to nature and the mindfulness it spurs.
Stone’s approach centers around clay as her primary medium; handbuilding abstracted forms that blur the boundary between sculpture and practical object. Informed by a background in Architecture and furniture design, Stone introduces functional elements into abstract forms, bringing her inspiration from nature to the objects we use every day.
Stone lives and works in Seattle, traditional land of its first people, the Duwamish Tribe. She has a public furniture installation at her alma mater, Montana State University. Stone has exhibited her artwork with Pottery Northwest Gallery, Rain City Clay, and Side Rail Collective, and is a member of Rat City Studios.
Artist Statement
It’s in the presence of the Salish Sea, douglas firs, and sword ferns that I meditate and foster a deeper connection to the world around me. The combination of awe and self-awareness when grounded in nature renews my perspective and nourishes my spirit.
Each piece I create is a continuation of this meditation, both in the mindful process of sculpting clay with my hands and as a lasting visual expression.
By introducing function to sculptural objects, I explore replacing our environment of manufactured things with objects of less utility and greater intrigue. Referencing recognizable forms and patterns from nature, my artwork abstracts these into sculptures that elevate awareness of our presence, creating an opportunity to slow down, breathe deeper, and find mindfulness in our chaotic world.
